Breast Cancer Awareness Month

A Personal Journey and Call to Action

Throughout Australia, breast cancer affects countless individuals and families, making Breast Cancer Awareness Month a crucial time to reflect and take action. At Vanessa Megan, this cause is particularly personal for Vanessa Gray Lyndon, who lost her best friend, Mel, to this devastating disease.

The Transformative Power of Friendship

In the vibrant 1990s, Vanessa and Mel forged an unbreakable bond, sharing life’s adventures in Western Australia. Mel’s inspiring wisdom, particularly her mantra that "you should never put anything on your skin that you couldn't eat," led Vanessa to explore natural skincare solutions. However, after discovering that most products contained harmful synthetic ingredients, she took the leap to create her own.

With approximately 20,000 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each year and 1 in 7 women expected to receive a diagnosis in their lifetime, Vanessa’s commitment to safety and efficacy in skincare is more important than ever. She has become a pioneer in the field of natural and organic skincare, ensuring her products are free from harmful chemicals and made with nourishing, safe ingredients.

Types of Breast Cancer and Advances in Treatment

Breast cancer is not a single disease but encompasses several types, including:

- Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC): This is the most common type, starting in the milk ducts and invading nearby tissue.

- Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC): This cancer begins in the lobules that produce milk and can spread to adjacent tissues.

- Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS): A non-invasive type where abnormal cells are contained within the ducts.

- Triple-Negative Breast Cancer: A more aggressive form that lacks three common receptors, making it more challenging to treat.

- Her2-positive Breast Cancer: This type has a specific gene mutation that promotes the growth of cancer cells.

Over the past 25 years, treatment and outcomes for breast cancer patients have improved dramatically thanks to advancements in research, treatment options, and early detection methods. Five-year survival rates have significantly increased, but there is still more work to be done, particularly in terms of awareness, funding, and access to treatment.

Honouring Mel’s Legacy

Mel's battle with breast cancer inspired Vanessa to perfect her formulations and prioritise clean, effective ingredients. Unfortunately, Mel passed away on December 28, 2004, after a courageous fight, leaving a legacy that drives Vanessa’s mission every day.

Show Your Support with Our Limited Edition Tote Bag

To further raise awareness and funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), Vanessa Megan has created a Limited Edition Tote Bag. With 50% of the proceeds going directly to the NBCF, this initiative aims to support vital research and help prevent future generations from hearing the words “you have breast cancer.”

How to Check for Breast Cancer

Self-examinations are essential for early detection. Here’s a simple guide to conducting a breast self-exam:

  1. Visual Inspection: Stand before a mirror. Look for any changes in size, shape, or colour of your breasts with your arms at your sides and then raised.
  2. Physical Examination: Use the pads of your fingers to feel for lumps or any unusual thickening. Move in a circular motion across the entire breast, including the armpit.
  3. Timing of Checks:Aim to perform self-exams monthly, ideally a few days after your period ends when your breasts are less likely to be tender.

Additionally, women over the age of 50 should get regular mammograms every two years for early detection.

Accessing Support

If you or someone you know is experiencing breast cancer, it’s essential to access the right support. Organisations like Cancer Council Australia provide comprehensive information, support services, and financial assistance. Additionally, the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) offers resources, helplines, and support groups specifically for those affected by breast cancer.
